Description

This position exists to conduct, manage and coordinate the load research activities necessary for the Southern Company's regulatory, rate-making, demand-side planning, market planning, end use sales support, customer choice, distribution planning, profitability assessment and forecasting functions. Load Research provides these functional areas at Southern and each of the operating companies with data profiling how customers use electricity, as well as class, rate, voltage level, and market segment summaries of this information. These profiles are used to evaluate the profitability, competitiveness, and likely effect of marketing and demand-side programs, existing and new rates, and support the regulatory needs of the Southern Company. This data is also necessary to a number of computer models including forecasting, profitability, rate evaluation, and cost-of-services models.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Analyze data, prepare and present results of load research projects to the company's management, staff, the operating companies, and regulatory bodies.
  • Support and provide expert consulting services to the users of load research data and computer analysis of it and data access programs to it.
  • Determine the load research needs of the company's business units and translate these into workable action plans and an annual load research work plan.
  • Provide a comprehensive up to date data catalog of prior load research and make it accessible throughout the Southern Company.
  • Provide regulatory requirements for all operating companies as needed to support rate case filings and PSC / intervener information requests.
  • Develop and provide load research analysis tools for analysts and users of load research.
  • Develop effective relationships with clients, peers, and managers.


JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum Bachelor degree in Engineering, Statistics, Math or analytical sciences.
  • Minimum Experience varies depending on the Position level.
  • An understanding of advanced statistical and mathematical modeling techniques and their transfer and development as computer based models.
  • An understanding of the company's goals, market theory and practices, and market research theory and practices.
  • An understanding of the likely business future of the company.
  • An understanding of software tools development related to the analysis and reporting of load and market data.
  • An understanding of the tasks and objectives of the users of load research.
  • An understanding of advanced experimental design and statistical analysis techniques.
  • An understanding of basic electrical and mechanical engineering concepts.
  • Knowledge of load research data and capabilities of outside consultants and vendors.
  • An understanding of Corporate Code of Ethics and the rules of ethical conduct for load research.
  • An understanding of Company data such as CSS, LDV, MARS, and outside data sources (CEED, Axiom, D&B, WDAS).
  • Written and oral communication skills in order to identify problems and issues and present load research information and findings to company staff and management and to industry related conferences; and to train others in the methods and uses of load research analyses.
  • Strong distribution planning, statistical, modeling, and analytical skills to examine a road range of complex load and energy usage issues, regulatory, rate-making, demand-side, planning, market planning, end-use sales support, customer choice, profitability assessment, and forecasting issues, and to reach a conclusion and present recommendations.
  • Computer skills to efficiently access and analyze huge load data, billing data and survey data files in a timely and cost effective manner and to develop reports and presentations.
  • Organizational and planning skills to identify issues, recognize problems and opportunities, and to develop strategies to resolve problems and capitalize on opportunities.
  • SAS analytical skills preferred.
  • Problem solving skills directly related to customer accounting and load data access, data management and data integrity, as well as statistical and analytical problem solving expertise.
  • Project management skills to set priorities and allocate resources to most effectively address Southern Company load research needs.
  • Interpersonal skills to effectively interact with not only coworkers, but also with employees and management in all SCS organizations and the operating companies.
