One can always cherry pick instances where a particular technique, with a particular dataset, under particular conditions, generate forecasts over a particular time period that are particularly good.

It would be helpful if authors would identify situations where their proposed method does not work very well. It seems likely they would know this from their testing, and it would save the rest of us a lot of time figuring it out for ourselves.

Paul Goodwin also has a good discussion of this topic in his Foresight article "High on Complexity, Low on Evidence: Are Advanced Forecasting Methods Always As Good As They Seem" (Fall 2011).Mike Gillilandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07820402714393546362noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8877300363130773882.post-48657943122921427282017-07-04T02:10:58.000-04:002017-07-04T02:10:58.000-04:00Interesting and helpful !Interesting and helpful !Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11645144412885188851noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8877300363130773882.post-65168075264623765372017-06-09T15:18:29.569-04:002017-06-09T15:18:29.569-04:00Congratulations Dr. HongCongratulations Dr. HongAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8877300363130773882.post-14717453690290095112017-06-09T08:05:14.491-04:002017-06-09T08:05:14.491-04:00Congratulations Dr. TaoCongratulations Dr. TaoAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06904700005803693492noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8877300363130773882.post-88859573628914751662017-06-08T18:08:38.940-04:002017-06-08T18:08:38.940-04:00Congratulations Dr. HongCongratulations Dr. HongAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04340850167881003697noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8877300363130773882.post-51214387281928240182017-06-01T08:24:25.063-04:002017-06-01T08:24:25.063-04:00Congratulations Tao on this much deserved honor, a...Congratulations Tao on this much deserved honor, and your recent election to the International Institute of Forecasters Board of Directors! As you can see fr...Thanks for your comments, Geert,
As you can see from the ISO NE case study of our paper, the wind speed variables offer some improvement to the forecast accuracy, but not much. The relative humidity variables from my other paper offer much more help than the wind speed variables.
Splitting wind chill should be a methodological enhancement, which is similar to splitting heat index.
I think the causal relationship is two-fold:
1. Wind helps "cool" down the environment. Intuitively, when it is cold and windy, people feel even colder, which makes the load higher. This, however, may not be observable from the data depending upon the geo location, noise level, etc.
2. Wind brings wind power, which can be taken as negative load if the wind farm is invisible to the operator. This makes the "net load" lower than the "organic load". This, again, may not be observable from the data, depending upon the wind energy penetration and how wind power is counted in the demand report.
In this paper we made our first and formal attempt to this problem, with the hope that others can contribute more to these realworld problems.
Tao Honghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09489402674214644453noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8877300363130773882.post-34503564251438875062017-05-18T10:07:37.713-04:002017-05-18T10:07:37.713-04:00Dear Tao,

...Dear Tao,

Compliments for the nice work again!

In GEFCom 2017 my experience was also that using wind chill instead of temperature didn't work for the New Iso region, opposed to most Dutch/UK/French datasets I have worked with so far.

Splitting the wind chill in various components and interacting with summer / winter sounds as a useful approach.

I was wondering if you could perhaps comment on the causal relationship between windspeed and load, in summer vs winter in the specific region? In other words, what is happening? This might help to aggregate variables and prevent overfitting.

BR, GeertGeert Scholmahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01477706436276823703noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8877300363130773882.post-25468360772588471422017-05-08T22:28:26.110-04:002017-05-08T22:28:26.110-04:00Thank you Prof.Hong.
